AROUND 300 people staged a peaceful protest in the capital yesterday, opposing US President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Malaysia for the 47th Asean Summit in October.
The demonstrators, made up of Malaysians and foreigners, gathered at Jalan Bukit Bintang at 5pm before marching to the KLCC Twin Towers, calling on the government to reject Trump’s presence.
The rally was led by Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia chairman, Professor Dr Muhammad Nazari Ismail, who said hosting Trump would betray Malaysia’s longstanding solidarity with Palestine.
Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua also joined the protest, condemning Trump’s pro-Israel stance and warning of more protests if the visit proceeds.
The demonstration ended peacefully around 7pm under police supervision.
Last week, a coalition of 23 NGOs released a joint statement urging Putrajaya to cancel Trump’s visit, citing his policies which they said show “blatant disregard” for Palestinian lives and “direct complicity” in enabling Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
The groups highlighted Trump’s decision to cut funding for Palestinian refugees, recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and broker the Abraham Accords without addressing occupation.
They described him as “an enabler of apartheid and violence,” stressing that to host him would tarnish Malaysia’s diplomatic integrity.
