Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of the teacher, who is attached to a school in Chini district.

"Yes, a school teacher has been arrested.

"Investigation is being carried out under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act and Section 377E of the Penal Code," he said.

Section 14(a) stipulates offences related to touching any body part of a child for sexual purposes and carries a maximum punishment of 20 years jail and liable to whipping, while Section 377E of the Penal Code (inciting a child to an act of gross indecency) carries a punishment of up to 15 years imprisonment and shall also be punished with whipping.

According to Othman, the suspect, who was arrested last Saturday, has been under police remand and is expected to be released on police bail today.

Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the school and other details that can lead to the identification of the child, who is a minor.

Chronology of events

A source close to the victim's family, who spoke to Malaysiakini, said the incident happened last Friday when the teacher was accompanying a group of students from Chini to a cultural performance in Pekan.

The suspect had allegedly approached the victim when he was sleeping and invited the boy to join him in bed, and committed sexual acts on the boy.

The victim's parents only learned about the incident after the boy returned home on Saturday and lodged a police report.

Police had since interviewed the victim, who had also been taken to the hospital for medical checks.

According to the relative, the family was also upset with the school head teacher for allegedly trying to stop them from escalating the case to the authorities.

"But I told him that this is not a case where the boy was scolded by a teacher; he was sexually assaulted. We then proceeded with the report.

"The head teacher then came to meet the victim and his family at the compound of the police station. He firstly apologised to the family for what happened, but later, when speaking to the victim, he questioned why the boy had told other people about the incident.

"Later that night, when the teacher (suspect) was handcuffed by police, the head teacher even dared to say he pitied the teacher.

"This is so unbelievable. This boy is the victim here; it shows how apathetic he was towards his students," the relative claimed.

According to the relative, the victim was still traumatised and said to be having nightmares since the incident. - Mkini
