Sabah deputy CM says new video a set-up to link him to mining scandal

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has described businessman Albert Tei's latest video implicating him in a mining scandal as a set-up because he could not really recall the conversation between him and Tei.

"But I am shocked that such conversation was privately recorded and now publicly displayed as if it has something to do with the mining scandal," he said.

"It appears that the video is about political donations years ago before the elections without any hint of receipt, unlike the earlier mining scandal.

"It is just a set-up to link us with the mining scandal, which has nothing to do with me or my Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) assemblymen," said the Star president in a WhatsApp message.

Jeffrey said as a leader of a conservationist party, neither him nor Star would apply for mining licences.

Tei, who has been charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, had dropped another video implying that money was paid to Star assemblymen, including Jeffrey.

In the viral video, Tei also mentioned mining licences being cancelled.

The chief minister alone holds the legal authority to grant mining licences in Sabah, and no licence could be issued without his final approval, as mandated by the Mining Ordinance 1960. - NST
