Sarawak craft brewer withdraws ‘Santubong’ beer after backlash

The brewer says it has taken the product off the shelves following criticism, including objections from Santubong MP Nancy Shukri.

PETALING JAYA:

 A Sarawak-based craft beer producer has withdrawn its product named “Santubong” after it drew public criticism, notably from Santubong MP Nancy Shukri.

The decision was made “due to the overwhelming response and attention around the name Santubong”, the company said in a Facebook post this week.

“After much thought, the name and product will no longer be used going forward, and the product has been removed from the shelves,” it said.

Nancy welcomed the company’s decision. She had earlier said that naming an alcoholic product after her parliamentary constituency was insensitive, particularly given its majority Muslim population.

According to product information, the beer was “inspired by the majestic Mount Santubong in Sarawak”. It is brewed and bottled in Sibu. - FMT
