The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry today advised traders of Ramadan bazaars against selling stale food which could cause the customers to suffer from food poisoning.
Minister Hamzah Zainudin said traders should not focus only on making a profit.
"It has been brought to my notice that stale food had been sold at some of these bazaars," he told reporters after handing over Bank Rakyat tithes to 500 poor people and single mothers at the Batu Kurau Umno building in Larut.
Each person received RM200, two bags of rice and dates.
Hamzah was asked to comment on a report of stale food having been sold at a Ramadan bazaar in Kuala Berang, Terengganu, recently that went viral on social media.
He also said that the ministry would hold a 'Jom Beli Barang Raya' (Let's Buy Raya Goods') programme at the car park of the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya from Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 11pm.
He said the ministry anticipated 150,000 visitors to make purchases from the 45 traders selling various goods such as clothing, electrical goods, furniture and the like.
"Customers will be given a discount of between 20 and 30 percent on the market price," he said, adding that this was the second programme of its kind.
The first was held last year and drew about 100,000 visitors, he added.
