After Waytha, Dr M now courts Palanivel supporters

In his bid to attract Indian votes for Pakatan Harapan in the next general election, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is now reportedly courting supporters of former MIC president G Palanivel.
According to Tamil daily Makkal Osai, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson extended an invitation to the Palanivel camp earlier this week, and they are expected to meet him as early as next week.
Palanivel was ousted from his position after a leadership tussle within the party, which saw an internal split into two camps, one under him and the other under current president Dr S Subramaniam.
This came after the Registry of Societies issued a notice on Dec 5, 2014, ordering the party to hold a re-election, in which Subramaniam won.
A sizeable number of Palanivel’s supporters have since returned to the party's fold, but Palanivel and his loyalists have held out.
The Makkal Osai report quoted a prominent member of Palanivel's team saying he felt honoured to have received the invitation from Mahathir and that they would definitely attend the meeting.
If the meeting goes well, the Palanivel loyalists are expected to switch their alliance from BN to Harapan, added the report.
Mahathir recently had a meeting with Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) chairperson P Waythamoorthy on possible collaboration in the 14th general election to attract Indian support.

On another matter, the report also said that former MIC central working committee (CWC) member, KP Samy, may be joining DAP.
"The businessman has toiled for the party the past 40 years (under former presidents S Samy Vellu and Palanivel) but he was not getting anywhere.
"Given that the current party leadership also does not recognise his contributions to the party, he has been pushed to a brink of joining another party," claimed the report, adding that the possibility of KP Samy joining DAP was raised after his recent meeting with a senior DAP leader.  - Mkini
