Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that the ex-aide of a Felda chairperson detained in connection with a corruption probe is a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leader.
Mahathir, who is Bersatu chairperson, said the party would take the necessary steps to protect this individual's interests.
The former premier also believes that the individual is not involved in any corrupt practice.
"We believe he is not involved. He was with the former chairperson for a long time, but he resigned because he was not happy,” he told reporters outside Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Yesterday, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad disclosed that the former aide was arrested in relation to Felda Investment Corporation's (FIC) purchase of a luxury hotel in Kuching, Sarawak.
Although Dzulkifli did not mention names, it is believed that the person arrested was the former aide to Isa Samad, who resigned as Felda chairperson on June 19.
It was reported that MACC had secured a five-day remand order against the suspect for investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
The suspect was the fourth brought in to facilitate MACC's probe into the purchase of the hotel.
Dzulkifli had last week ordered an investigation paper to be opened to determine if the hotel was bought at a much higher cost than the market price. - Mkini
