PETALING JAYA: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says he has no idea who invited Umno’s Zahid Hamidi to join the party some twenty years ago.
He said the Islamist party could invite any Umno member and anyone else who is eligible to join them.
“I do not know who offered or who he is referring too but we at PAS normally invite everyone to join us,” he said.
“We hope everyone joins PAS. If Umno can join PAS that will be good,” he told FMT today.
Zahid, who is deputy prime minister, today claimed that he had been offered to join PAS after he stepped down as Umno Youth chief, following the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim from Umno and the government in 1998.
“I was approached by a PAS leader who asked me to leave Umno and join PAS. My friends from PAS said that I had spent enough time with Umno,” the acting deputy president of Umno had said.
Zahid had also said he sought advice from the late Haron Din, who was then PAS’ information chief, who told him stay and contribute to Umno.
He added that when he was the Umno Youth chief in the 1990s, the then prime minister and Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not fond of him and had tried to look for ways to remove him from that post.
Tuan Ibrahim said Malaysia practises democracy where everyone has the right to decide which party he wants to join.
“For me, it would be Zahid’s personal choice to remain with Umno,” he said.
