PETALING JAYA: A training hotel and convention centre used by Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) hospitality industry students may risk closure some 30 years after it started operations, FMT has learnt.
It is understood that the hotel’s five-storey blocks will be converted into dormitories for students of UiTM for three years, beginning March 2019.
According to a circular by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd, the company has terminated the services of its subsidiary company, Intekma, which operates the Intekma Resort and Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
The letter, dated Jan 10, 2019, also announced a staff separation scheme (SSS) for employees of UiTM Hospitality Management Services Sdn Bhd (UHMSSB).
Saying it aims for a complete shutdown by end of March, the 3-star hotel, which has been a popular spot to host Malay weddings over the years, will also not accept new reservations for rooms or events.
“Terminating the hotel and hospitality services and operations was not an easy decision to make for the management,” the letter said.
“Various discussions and negotiations took place with the board of directors and stakeholders to reach an agreement on this.”
FMT has contacted UiTM Holdings, but has yet to get a response.
The letter further stated that Intekma had been facing operational and financial problems for the last four years.
It also said the hotel and hospitality industry has been going through challenging times, especially in the Shah Alam vicinity. - FMT
