CAMERON POLLS | DAP’s Cameron Highlands by-election candidate M Manogaran has reassured that everyone has the right to vote of their own free will, free from force or bribery.
“They can vote for anybody they want but we must give them the freedom to vote, that is my wish,” Manogaran said at a press conference at Pos Menson today.
He was responding to a question on whether he can assure that tok batin (village chiefs) will not lose their jobs or salaries based on their party support.
“They are open to make their own decisions at the ballot box. No bribery or force,” he said.
This issue arose after PKR senator Bob Manolan Mohd allegedly warned the tok batin that they could lose their posts and income if they do not support the Pakatan Harapan government.
He later clarified that he meant the village chiefs should not be involved with Umno while receiving an allowance from Putrajaya due to a conflict in interest.
However, he did not address his comment on depriving the tok batin of their posts or salaries, which was caught in an audio recording.
Manogaran had distanced himself from the comment.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng stressed that tok batin will continue to receive their salaries, without any intimidation. - Mkini
