Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has said that Goldman Sachs should take responsibility if it failed to take care of the interests of 1MDB.
“We put up a system and it was there to take care of our interests.
“So if they failed, then they have to take responsibility because they were appointed and paid by 1MDB to take care of our interests,” Najib said to reporters at the Kampung Raja Mosque in Cameron Highlands today.
This comes after Goldman Sachs chief executive officer David Solomon apologised to the Malaysian people for former banker Tim Leissner’s role in the 1MDB scandal.
However, Solomon had said the bank had conducted due diligence before every transaction.
Goldman Sachs is currently being investigated by Malaysian authorities and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) for underwriting and arranging three bond sales that raised US$6.5 billion for 1MDB.
Leissner was one of two former Goldman Sachs bankers charged in the US last year in connection with the 1MDB scandal.
He pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder money, and conspiring to violate the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by paying bribes to various Malaysian and Abu Dhabi officials and circumventing internal accounting controls at Goldman Sachs.
The other former Goldman Sachs banker charged is Roger Ng, who is currently in jail in Malaysia pending extradition proceedings brought by the US.
Najib was the head of 1MDB's advisory board and was required, according to the company's constitution, had the sole discretion in some of the company's important executive decisions.
After BN was dethroned following May 9, 2018 elections, Najib was hauled to court several times to face a long list of criminal charges in relations to 1MDB. -Mkini
