PETALING JAYA: The nation’s top cop says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), not the police, will probe any incident of money politics in the Cameron Highlands by-election.
According to Bernama, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police would only focus on security issues.
“We held a meeting a few days ago and financial issues will be investigated by MACC, not the police. So far, the by-election is coming along smoothly,” he was quoted as saying.
He was asked to comment on whether police would investigate allegations of vote-buying after several pictures went viral on social media.
Social media users, including Barisan Nasional leaders, cried foul over money politics following the circulation of the pictures which showed a woman in a Pakatan Harapan (PH) shirt handing out money to several youth.
PH however denied any wrongdoing, with Arvind Bharet, the Jelai PH operations centre deputy chief, saying the recipients were volunteers who were receiving reimbursements for their petrol expenses.
He said the volunteers had gone to Tanah Rata on their motorcycles from their homes in the interior areas during nomination on Saturday.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has said it is investigating the matter. - FMT
