Airports operator inks agreements to improve Subang Airport

MAHB group CEO Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin and TPAM managing director Ng Seok Bee exchange agreements as Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook and Selangor MB Amirudin Shari look on.
LANGKAWI: Malaysia’s main airport operator has signed two agreements with Singapore-based Boustead Projects Limited (Boustead) and TP Aerospace Malaysia Sdn Bhd (TPAM) which will boost the Subang Airport Regeneration initiative.
The agreement sees Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) setting up a joint venture (JV) company with Boustead Projects to develop a 29-acre aerospace park within the Subang Aerotech Park.
MAHB, which will hold a 30% stake in the JV, is developing the common infrastructure including roads, electricity and water supply at a cost of RM40 million, while Boustead which owns the remaining stake will be tasked with design, construction, and facility management for the aerospace park.
Speaking to FMT after the exchanging of agreement ceremony, MAHB group CEO Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin said companies which manufacture aircraft parts or provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities want a facility that is built to suit their needs in the aerospace park.
“We want to build the facilities to these specs and that is where Boustead’s expertise comes in, they can design a facility to the tenant’s needs and then build it.
“The tenant will then rent the facility from us for a long time, and this is attractive to them because they do not need to pump in huge amounts of capital, it is almost like a ‘plug and play’ concept.”
Raja Azmi said MAHB was fully committed to making Malaysia the preferred aerospace nation in the region and an integral part of the global supply chain as outlined in the National Aerospace Blueprint 2015-2030.
Already, he said, Malaysia had drawn top-tier companies such as Spirit Aerosystems and Senior Aerospace, which supply components to Boeing and Airbus.
“KLIA also serves as the base for Airbus’ only wholly-owned MRO facility in the world, as well as one of five locations worldwide for the Airbus Customer Service Cente,” he said, at the event which was attended by Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
As for the agreement with TPAM, which is part of the TP Aerospace Group in Denmark, the company will invest RM2 million to operate an MRO facility for wheels and brakes. It has already obtained approval for this from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.
“Bousted will help us ensure we provide excellent built-to-suit facilities for aerospace players at the Aerotech Park, and TP Aerospace helps close the gap in the Subang Airport MRO value chain, namely in MRO of aircraft wheels and brakes,” said Raja Azmi.
Meanwhile, Loke welcomed the collaborations to make Malaysia an MRO hub, noting that Subang was a good location for this. - FMT
