Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has chastised students who held a protest against his event in Kuala Lumpur today.
“They should have practiced openness. We should respect one another even though we have differing opinions.
“This (protest) should not have happened, disturbing those doing their business that was done following the rules and with proper decorum,” Najib told reporters when asked about the incident.

Najib’s supporters had confronted a group of Universiti Malaya (UM) students after one of them held up a large clown face cutout mocking the former premier who was attending an event at UM.
One student, Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) president Wong Yan Ke, was manhandled and put in a reverse chokehold during the confrontation.
In a Facebook post later, Najib expressed regret at the scuffle which he claimed occurred due to provocation.
“I was speaking inside, and they were provocating outside. Because of that provocation, a small fight broke out momentarily.
“I regret that fight,” he posted.

Some six students had taken part in the protest holding placards which read: “Arrest Najib”, “Najib is shameless”, “Return the people’s money” and “Where is RM2.6 billion?”
Prior to the manhandling incident, Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam had snatched the clown face cutout from Wong and tore it.
Lokman later told reporters that he was provoked because they had used his “boss” Najib’s image.
