KUALA LUMPUR: The report by the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) will remain under the Official Secrets Act as it contains confidential information, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohamed Hanipa Maidin said the report is with the prime minister, and there are no intentions to make it public.
“Some ask why the report is under OSA,” he said. “I want to stress that the OSA is needed in any country.
“Previously, we were angry not because of OSA but because it was abused to protect corruption and wrongdoing.”
He said the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, too, had been against abuse of the law.
“But now we want to protect information that is considered confidential,” he said, adding that this is the difference between the PH and Barisan Nasional governments.
He was responding to Wong Kah Woh (PH-Ipoh Timur) who asked if the government would reveal the report so that it can be debated on by the public.
CEP member KS Jomo previously said the report should not be made public as it contains sensitive information that could be abused.
The other members of the CEP were former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Petronas chairman Hassan Marican and billionaire tycoon Robert Kuok.
