EC lauds tightening of rules to change MyKad address

Election Commission chairman Azhar Harun.

KUALA LUMPUR: Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Harun today praised the National Registration Department (NRD) for its move in requesting for supporting documents from anyone wanting to change their identity card (MyKad) addresses.
“The need for supporting documents to be attached with any application to change the address on identity cards will ensure the applicant actually stays at that particular place,” said Azhar in a statement today.
He also said the move announced by the government was fair as it would help the commission combat electoral fraud.
“It will prevent irresponsible parties from registering voters in certain areas or moving them to other areas by using fake or third-party addresses.
"This move will directly help the EC to create an electoral roll that is more accurate, of integrity and credible, especially in the issue of the validity of voters’ residential addresses,” said the chairman, better known as Art Harun.
Last Thursday, Deputy Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman announced that any application for a change of address in the MyKad should be submitted with supporting documents, such as utility bills, quit rent or rent receipt, to prove that the applicant had been staying at the new address.
This new rule is effective from May 2, 2019. - FMT
