PAS veep: 10-year jail for man who insulted Islam justified

PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the 10-year jail sentence imposed on a Sarawakian man who insulted Prophet Muhammad, on Facebook, is justified.

"If you ask me, I agree. This is because it serves as a warning to all quarters.
"If we are lenient (with punishment), it seems as if we are encouraging people in stuff like this. At least when we punish (like this), it will let the people think," Mohd Amar, who is also the deputy Kelantan menteri besar, told reporters in Kota Bharu today.
He was responding to the 10 years and 10 months imprisonment of Alister Cogia, 22, imposed by the Kuching Sessions Court last week after he pleaded guilty to insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad, via Facebook.
The punishment has drawn flak from various quarters, who called for a review.
Meanwhile, The Star Online today reported that the Kuching High Court ordered Cogia to undergo a mental observation at the Sentosa Hospital for a month.

Mohd Amar pointed out that in Islam insulting the prophet is, by right, punishable by death.
"This if we are talking about the harshest punishment possible. It doesn't matter which prophet (is insulted), because (all) prophets are highly revered.
"And religions cannot be insulted. Although sometimes we don't agree (with others), we should not resort to insulting other religions," he stressed. - Mkini
