Police have denied arresting any individual in relation to the suspected toxic waste dumping in Pasir Gudang.
"We never said (anything about arrests); someone else said it but the police have made no arrest," Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Fuzi said this when asked about media reports that three individuals had been arrested over the toxic pollution in Pasir Gudang.
On Tuesday, Johor Department of Environment (DoE) director Mohammad Ezzani Mat Salleh was reported by Bernama as saying that three people had been arrested over the incident. They included two factory owners.
Subsequently, Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said on Wednesday that one of the individuals would be charged. However, nothing has taken place.
Despite not making any arrest yet, Fuzi said police are investigating the matter under Sections 278 and 284 of the Penal Code.
Attempts to trace culprits intensified
At the same time, he said, he had no information about the factory said to be responsible for the pollution, and the number of individuals called for questioning so far.
"I have not been informed which factory is responsible, but we have intensified attempts to trace down the culprits with the help of other agencies involved, especially the Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Ministry.
"I also have not been briefed about the number of statements taken but the investigation has been amplified," he added.
As for the type of chemical responsible for the pollution, Fuzi said the Chemistry Department is still checking on it.
The dumping of suspected chemical wastes into the Sungai Kim Kim in Pasir Gudang caused toxic pollution in the area.
Toxic fumes from the river have forced hundreds of people to seek medical treatment, and more than 100 schools in the area to be shut down. - Mkini
