KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians living in rural areas are happier than those living in the cities, according to a study conducted by the Malaysian Urban Rural National Indicators Network on Sustainable Development (MURNInets).
The study, covering 101 local authorities, found that 72 of them had scored the happy level, and 40 of the 72 were district councils.
Of the remaining 32 authorities, 26 were municipal councils and only six were city councils.
The study involved 31,733 respondents from 11 states in peninsular Malaysia.
They were asked on relationships within the family and neighbourhood, interaction between people, the safety of the population, the level of health facilities, the level of local authority services, and environmental issues.
The findings showed that the 10 most happy local authorities were the Kuala Terengganu City Council in Terengganu, Petaling Jaya City Council (Selangor), Manjung Municipal Council (Perak), Batu Gajah District Council (Perak), Bentong Municipal Council (Pahang), Jasin Municipal Council (Melaka), Jeli District Council (Kelantan), Segamat Municipal Council (Johor), Padang Terap District Council (Kedah) and Bandar Baharu District Council (Kedah).
MURNInets, initiated by the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning, measures and evaluates the sustainability level of a local authority’s area through a set of predetermined indicators. -FMT
