KUALA LUMPUR: PAS today said it had no problem with forming a backdoor government, unlike Umno which earlier said it would only take over from Pakatan Harapan through formal means.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said forming a government was like a football match in which teams would exploit any weaknesses to score a goal over their opponents.
“In Parliament, there’s a front door, a back door and also other side doors.
“We can enter through any door we want, as long as we enter the door. I’m okay,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly here today.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in his speech at the assembly that the Muafakat Nasional initiative would not make use of back-door avenues to form a new government through negotiations with political leaders.
“Through Muafakat Nasional, we will not dream of a change of government through the back door.
“Even if the back and front doors are wide open, we will still choose to go through the front door,” he said.
Takiyuddin also said that Umno and PAS are in discussions to register Muafakat Nasional as a legitimate coalition.
“It’s in the process, it’s a new coalition,” he said.
“To form a new coalition, we need to check with the Registrar of Societies. It can’t be just one party forming a coalition.” - FMT
