Childcare centre provided at PKR Congress

The PKR Congress in Malacca this year saw the addition of a childcare centre, prepared for the convenience of those attending with children.

Malacca PKR Women information chief Avonne Chee, who runs two kindergartens in the state, said she wanted to prepare a space for children at the congress this year to create a welcoming environment for families.

"When the congress came to Malacca, it was something I proposed to the committee because I think this is something that is worthy. Education and good childcare is actually the foundation and basis for nation-building.

"What we want to present is that families can come, as our party members consist of families with young children as well.

"This is something I think many Malaysians are aspiring to, they want good education and good family life that's holistic as well.
"We want this to set a precedent for us and also other parties who may be organising anything similar," Chee said to Malaysiakini today at one of the meeting rooms at Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC) which was converted into a temporary childcare centre.

The PKR national congress is being held at the MITC from Dec 5 to 8. Today is the PKR Women and Youth wings' congress.

When Malaysiakini visited the centre, which was located on the first floor of the venue, there were about 15 children in the room, either drawing, playing or sleeping.
Chee said about 20 children had been registered at the centre today, with the youngest being six months old and the oldest 11 years old.
A survey was conducted beforehand to determine how many people were going to utilise the service so based on that we knew there was a demand, she said.

There are three carers stationed at the centre, with two of them being co-opted from Chee's kindergarten and the other one a part-timer, she added.
The parents, she said, were very receptive towards this initiative.
"They were very surprised, they liked it. This is informal so they can just come and go.

"For this round, we didn't manage to provide any food or drinks due to allergies and things like that, so we just provided a space for them.

"All the children have identity cards, we keep the security tight here," Chee said.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the Women, Family and Community Development minister had said that her ministry was targeting for all government agencies to set up a child nursery at their respective workplaces. - Mkini
