Cops nab six alleged gang members after video of funeral procession goes viral

GEORGE TOWN: Police nabbed six alleged gang members for taking part in a funeral procession, which had a hearse which was decked with images believed to be linked to the notorious Gang 04.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said they arrested the suspects, aged between 21 and 26, on Saturday (Dec 14), after a video of the funeral procession went viral.
"We received a report around 11pm on Friday (Dec 13) after the hearse heading towards Lorong Batu Lanchang caused gridlock in the area.
He said that the funeral was for alleged gang member who died on Dec 10 after a bike accident.
ACP Soffian said four of the suspects had previous records for drugs, robbery and murder.
"All of them have been remanded for four days," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Societies Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
ACP Soffian urged the public who plan to hold processions to seek the advice of the police to prevent any unnecessary inconvenience to road users.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Penang Hindu Association said it was time to consider rehabilitation for youths who were involved with gangs.
"We should not be quick to punish them as some they may come from poverty-stricken families. We should educate them and give them a chance to reform," he added.- Star
