Hugs and kisses for Kisona as other winners deserve credit too

Surreal moment: S. Kisona kneeling on the court after beating Indonesia’s Ruselli Hartawan to win the women’s singles gold.
S. KISONA’S sensational victory in the women’s singles event has to be the biggest highlight in the badminton competition at the Games.

The 21-year-old earned her big break after Goh Jin Wei, the 2017 KL Games champion, pulled out of the squad following a surgery to fixher stomach ailment.

And Kisona took her chances and surprised everyone by defending the gold for Malaysia.

Thai duo, world No. 5 Ratchanok Intanon and No. 16 Busanan Ongbamrungphan, did not take part in the individual events as they left after winning the team gold - to focus on the World Tour Finals in Guangzhou, China.

But that should not take any credit away from world No. 104 Kisona who was on fire to beat all higher ranked players - Gregoria Mariska Tunjung (No. 24), Nitchaon Jindapol (No. 22) and Ruselli Hartawan (No. 37) en route to the victory. Her feat is nothing but extraordinary.

Kisona also did well in her role as the second singles during the semi-finals against Thailand. She stretched Busanan to three games before losing.

The rise of Kisona certainly augurs well for the women’s singles department that has been relying on Jin Wei and Soniia Cheah in international top-flight tournaments over the last two years.

Lee Zii Jia and Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik won the men’s singles and men’s doubles titles respectively in the absence of top Indonesians players world No. 6 Jonatan Cristie, No. 8 Anthony

Ginting and the world’s top two doubles pairs Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo-Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, but take nothing away from the Malaysian young stars.

In fact, the gold won by Zii Jia did not only mark his first victory of the season, but he has now won something that even his idol Lee Chong Wei has not won at this level.

Chong Wei only managed to win the team gold twice in 2001 and 2005.

As for Aaron-Wooi Yik, lifting their first title of their partnership is going to do their confidence a whole world of good.- Star
