KUCHING: Bridge construction projects in Sarawak are managed in a transparent manner with an open tender system, Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today.
“Only a few weeks ago, we launched the construction of Batang Rambungan bridge, and previously we launched the Kuala Kemena bridge and Batang Lasa bridge.
“Soon to be launched are the Batang Saribas bridge, Batang Krian bridge and Batang Paloh bridge,” he said, adding that the Batang Lupar bridge construction project would be tendered out soon.
“All these bridge projects costing a few billion ringgit are carried out on open tender basis and lobbying for the projects is out of the question in line with our quest towards transparency and good governance.
“The people will also judge our integrity and credibility based on our ability to ensure that the projects we promised are delivered according to the budget and on time,” he said when launching Sarawak Public Service Day 2019 here.
Abang Johari said the planning and implementation of development programmes should reflect the integrity of public officials.
“Civil servants are not just employed to warm their seats or to just wait to be instructed. They are expected to help plan and implement development programmes for the benefit of the people.
“There are problems, technical or otherwise, that might crop up during the implementation of projects but we must be adept at troubleshooting and seek expeditious ways to make the necessary rectification and make up for any loss of time,” he said.
He said the placement of certified integrity officers at each ministry and government department in the state alone would not lead to the eradication of corruption, misappropriation or power abuse.
Civil servants had to take the lead by not being involved in corruption or abuse their authority, he said. - FMT
