Penang car workshops, tow truck drivers call off strike

Penang Motor Vehicles Workshop Owners’ Association president Khor Kong Siah (in grey) shakes hands with the chief minister’s political secretary, Teh Lai Heng, following the successful conclusion of talks in Juru today.
BUTTERWORTH: Workshops and tow truck drivers in Penang have called off their strike over a carmakers’ move to restrict repairs to official service centres after authorities met with them to discuss their grouses.
The group representing the workshops and tow truck drivers had entered the third day of their indefinite strike against the move, which they said would put them out of business by voiding warranties on cars repaired at third-party shops.
Penang Motor Vehicles Workshop Owners’ Association president Khor Kong Siah said the strike was called off after the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) had agreed to meet the group to talk .
He told reporters in Juru here a high-powered team from various federal ministries had met with him and other committee members to hear their concerns.
“We had been waiting for three years for this. We have had a fruitful discussion with the government officials for two hours yesterday.
“All we want is a level playing field for all in the car repair industry,” he said.

Thirty-five Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) registered workshops in Penang had shuttered since Monday and some 200 tow truck drivers had stayed off the road to protest against the anti-competitive move by major carmakers insisting that repairs be carried out only at official service centres.
About 100 tow trucks from workshops registered with the association parked in an empty lot in Juru in protest.
The protesters said the car manufacturers’ practice would put them out of business by voiding the warranties on cars repaired at third-party shops such as theirs.
Khor claimed that even the smallest of repairs, such as minor fender benders, replacing car batteries, applying solar-rejection tint films on windows or changing speakers ran the risk of voiding manufacturer warranty. - FMT
