UMNO AGM | Following BN's overwhelming victory in Tanjung Piai by-election, Umno announced its plan to move toward political equilibrium, an approach which it claimed will protect the rights of all Malaysians.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (photo) said Umno need to take up political equilibrium approach as a way forward.
"We need a political equilibrium to neutralize the cult politics in Malaysia now. Umno is not a rigid, racist and a too liberal party," he said when delivering his policy speech at the party general assembly held today"
"We must adopt politics of equilibrium or a balanced politics which protects the rights of the non-Malays, openness and administering the nation according to the Federal Constitution and the social contract," added Zahid.
He said Muafakat National, which steered by PAS and Umno, has adopted the political equilibrium.
"Muafakat National portrays the political equilibrium that protect all races although the Malay is the pillar, but the interest of the Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan and others will be respected," he said.
Citing former PAS president Burhanuddin al-Helmy, Zhid said the nationalism of the Malays should be based on a broad range of inner judgement instead of narrow, stubborn, chauvinist or isolated mind.
Zahid pointed out the BN's victory in Tanjung Piai with a majority of 15,086 votes has proven Muafakat National is above any other ideologies.
"It proved that we celebrate our differences and it dismissed the allegation that the two biggest Malay-based parties are racists with a Taliban tag.
"The by-election also provided us lessons and became a yardstick for the Chinese community and non-Malay support for BN and Muafakat National," he said.
