CORONAVIRUS | The government will initiate the first phase of efforts to allow students stuck in dormitories to return home tonight.
In total, 1,128 students in the central and northern region will be sent home later today.
Most students will be dropped off at police stations and district offices.
Only one family member will be allowed to retrieve them, said Senior Minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob during his daily press briefing today.
Local authorities will arrange transport for those unable to do so themselves.
Ismail said 863 students are to be relocated from the central zone to the northern zone.
"The same busses will bring back students from the north," he said.
He said all busses and luggage will be sanitised before departure.
In total, the exercise will involve nine universities, 49 busses and 17 destinations.
Ismail said efforts to return students to Sabah and Sarawak will only begin on May 1.
This exercise will involve four airports - Pengkala Chepa, Senai, KLIA and Penang.

Meanwhile, Ismail expressed gratitude to fast food chain Mary Brown and baker Gardenia for sponsoring food for those preparing for fast.
He said many of the trips will take place overnight and the students will not be able to stop for food.
"If there are private companies which wish to sponsor, please contact the Higher Education Ministry," he said.
Tertiary learning institution students residing in official hostels have been effectively under quarantine since March 18.
The government has decided to allow them to return home but in a controlled and organised manner. - Mkini
