New dates set for Najib, Rosmah graft trials

Former prime minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.
PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak’s 1MDB corruption trial, which was halted due to restrictions under the movement control order (MCO), will resume on May 13.
“We received an email today from the court, notifying parties about the new date,” deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Garib told FMT.
However, he said the new date would likely be subject to whether the MCO is lifted as scheduled on May 12.
Najib’s trial was supposed to resume on April 15. It was then postponed to April 29, and again to today following the extensions of the MCO.
High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who is presiding over the trial, has also fixed trial dates from June to October.
Najib faces four charges of abusing his position to obtain gratification totalling RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same money.
When the hearing resumes, lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is expected to continue cross-examining the ninth prosecution witness, former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi.
Akram said the court also notified parties today that the corruption trial of Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, had been fixed from June 9 to 11, and July 6 to 23.
Rosmah’s trial, which was also supposed to resume on April 15, was likewise disrupted by MCO restrictions.
She is charged with soliciting RM187.5 million from Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director and majority shareholder Saidi Abang Samsudin as an inducement to help the company secure a solar hybrid project for 369 schools in Sarawak.
She is also accused of receiving bribes amounting to RM6.5 million from Saidi between 2016 and 2017.
The defence is expected to cross-examine the 12th prosecution witness, former education ministry secretary-general Alias Ahmad, when the trial resumes before High Court judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan. - FMT
