The month after Raya will be very critical in determining whether Malaysia will succeed or fail in this Covid 19 war. And the reason for failure can be summarised under this 4 factors B.I.R.D.
B stands for border. The Indonesian Malaysian borders is extremely porous and almost impossible to seal. The thousands of fishing boats that travels the strait of Melaka as well as the South China sea also act as an illegal conduit for illegal migrants. Malaysia simply do not have the maritime and naval resources to seal these sea lanes effectively. The border between Kalimantan with Sarawak & Sabah are even harder to monitor or seal. These allows continued illegal movement between our 2 countries. That explains why millions of illegal Indonesians are able to enter and reside in Malaysia at any given time.
I is Indonesia. The Italy of Asia. Many report has indicated that this country will become the Italy of Asia due to their lack of effective lock down and testing resulting in millions of folks exposed to Covid 19. 80% of the imported Covid 19 cases are students back from Indonesia. . While Malaysia started this Covid war with 33 million PPE for the hospitals, Indonesia had less than 200,000 PPE for all their hospitals. Their healthcare will be overwhelmed and more than 30 doctors , dentist and numerous nurses had died from Covid 19 infection in the past months. And this is only the beginning.
R is Raya . Traditionally many Indonesian goes back home during Raya. This year with so many jobless and running out of food due to MCO in Malaysia , many will try to head back to their village to both celebrate raya as well as wait out our MCO before coming back again after Raya. If only 10% of the estimated 2.5 million Indonesians in Malaysia heads back to Indonesia and than come back again , it will mean potentially an unimaginable number of imported Covid 19 cases after raya . So far around 4.5% of all Covid test turns up +ev in Malaysia and 4.5% of 250,000 is a huge 5000+ cases. The infectivity rate is around 1 person to 2 or 3 ( without MCO which I assume will be lifted partially after Raya) that means beginning of July, we will have an exponential increase in daily new cases with perhaps thousands of new cases everyday. Our PPE may have run out by than ( DG says will last until only the end of April without new supplies) which means our hospital will be overwhelmed with many doctors and nurses falling ill and unable to work. So far more than 45 GP has being infected and that number is sure to increase resulting in many clinics closing.
D is National Debt. Without oil revenue and business taxes , our government will not be able to continue providing wage support to the millions of stay at home out of job employees nor companies that employs them. Tens of Thousands of companies will close down resulting in massive job lost and families in distress. Without borrowing even more from say IMF or China, we will not be able to fund the war against Covid 19. IMF borrowing may comes with the unthinkable subsidies cut, termination of Bumi preferential policy which our gov most likely will not accept. Thus the only avenue would be China with their very high interest rate. In the long run , we will be colonise or "coronise" economically by PRC due to our massive debts to them.
China has always eye Malaysia's strategic port due to the Strait of Melaka. 80% of their crude oil passes through this strait and 1/3 of the world's good are shipped through here as well. Controlling this key passage way is thus vital to China's national interest and having a permanent port for their navy as a counter weight to US's 6th fleet presence in Singapore is of upmost importance. Thus it is in their interest to help us by applying all the financial and medical helps that we need but at a price.
Perhaps with piracy increase due to economic down turn in Indonesia, China will have an excuse to step in and begin to patrol this straits and there by help to safe guard our border.
In short , until an effective vaccine or treatment becomes widely available, Malaysia's future will be determine by factors that is beyond her control.

ReplyDeleteStill too early to tell for certain but more scientific evidence now suggest that the virus originated from outside of China. China was merely the first country to take notice of it, report it to WHO and rest of the world, and took drastic actions to fight and overcome the virus and prevent its spread. It's not China's fault that other countries, or their people, chose to ignore the early warnings given and continue to party, and to play politics instead.

If only they did not hide the fact from the world and shut out the people who tried to bring it to light (like the doctor in wuhan who eventually died), much of this mess could have been avoided.
If only they had shut all international travel as early as Nov19 and requested other countries to do the same while revealing the true extent of the spreadability of the virus, so many lives around the world could have been saved... the communist true to their form hid the fact until it was too big to hide anymore.... then they started the propaganda that local authorities were to blame and then as the anger of their population started to grow they shifted the blame to US solders so to create a common enemy and bring back the population to their side..... The Comunist must be held accountable!
Those who argue China must compensate for the pandemic must be ignorant of the scientific reports on the possible source of COVID 19. More evidence is showing the virus could have started in America as Strain A. Will these people ask America to compensate if that is eventually confirmed? If you will only keep quiet, you are showing that you are just a hypocrite.

Wuhan has just organised the World Military Games in which many other countries have taken part. US normally takes a lot of gold medals but many of their athletes werw not feeling well. And were flew back to US. The China government has requested for the reasons of these athletes withdrawal but nothing were disclosed so far. Are they the ones that brought in Covid-19 Virus to China?
So let us be fair. They too has suffered much and gave us a lot of helpful assistance.
It is like asking America to compensate the Iraqis for the war on them claiming to have Weapons of Mass Destruction. The facts showed that America lied and they were greedy for the oil.
This pandemic restores interlink solutions and if even ONE party collapses then it is the end result, to suffer or be gone. Ignoring the reality and blaming others will only drown us further into the quicksand. Let's start reaching out our hands to the needy dearest PEOPLE 😢

DeleteBesides B.I.R.D., Malaysia doesn't have adequate infrastucture to carry out 100% testing like in China, South Korea or Taiwan to have more accurate data on the infection rate and affected areas to enable more effective measures to contain the spead of the virus. Malaysia is doing the next best thing which is targeted testing of vulnerable areas and communities. This is commendable under the present constraints. However, it still leave many gaps in the overall fight to contain the spread of the virus more effectively. As such, with these gaps in the testing, the number of daily reported cases and the apparently encouraging flattening of the curve may not be that reliable/ accurate since many susceptible areas remained untested.

Your conclusion seems that you are so sure that China has under reported. This is not a normal virus that every one is familiar with. China was not even aware of this crisis when it hit them. And no countries have responded correctly too. Neither did they claimed to have 100% tested. And South Korea and Taiwan too didn't claimed that. But China respond was fast and at times people said draconian. And in the short span, they managed to recover.
DeleteEven the US being warned many times was only interested in the blame game until they themselves were badly affected. Until US wanted to impose a lock down, then they realized that it was never easy to do that in the US unlike in China.

ReplyDeleteWhen God brings a judgement on a nation, it is because that nation sins rampantly and starting with the country leadership. Corruption and lies are the norm in Malaysia. And almost from every sector in the governmental departments or GLC's, cheating was the norm. And most these are under control of the Muslim leaders. Yet they kept on saying and talking about the goodness of Islam. When they themselves can't walk the talk, that is hypocrisy at best and an indirect insult to their Allah.
