The police are investigating the incident of a teenager being forced into a patrol car boot after being detained for violating the movement control order (MCO) in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
Kedah police chief Zainuddin Yaacob told Malaysiakini that the integrity and compliance to standards (JIPS) unit of the state headquarters is investigating the five police personnel.
"An internal probe is ongoing. Action will be taken against the five if they are found to have committed the offence,” he added.
On April 23, Ahmad Radhi Bashizan, 19, filed a police report against the five.
The teenager, who is recovering from surgery and using crutches, claimed that the police personnel forced into him and another person into the boot and drove them to a police beat.
He was subsequently transferred to a lock-up in the Kuala Muda district police headquarters, where he spent the night.
The teenager was later freed on police bail. He was told to appear in court on April 29 to face charges.
His case was highlighted by the NGO Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict), which also quoted Ahmad Radhi as claiming that he had trouble breathing when in the boot.
It was also alleged that the police did not allow him to use the crutches when he was under detention.
It is learnt that Ahmad Radhi was arrested together with his 23-year old friend at a playground near his house.
Malaysiakini understands that the pair claimed they had gone to the playground for better mobile phone reception.
Meanwhile, Zainuddin reminded the public to adhere to the MCO, which was implemented on March 18 in order to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
The partial lockdown has been extended thrice since then and is scheduled to end on May 12. - Mkini
