Police are investigating a baby dumping case after the body of a newborn girl was found left at the side of the road in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Wangsa Maju district police chief Rajab Ahad Ismail called on those with information on the case to assist investigations.
In a statement, he explained police received a call from a member of the public yesterday at 10am, informing them of the discovery of the body.
The child had been wrapped in brown cloth and placed in an orange bag which was then left on the roadside in Section 6, Wangsa Maju.
“A police team from Wangsa Maju was mobilised to the scene, along with medical help from Hospital Kuala Lumpur emergency unit.
“Preliminary investigations by the HKL officers confirmed the baby girl, in a good state when found, had died. It was suspected she had just been born as there were bits of the umbilical cord on the baby’s body.
The body was sent to the HKL forensic unit for further investigations.
Rajab added that a witness, who went by the site at 9.30am that day, claimed to have observed a couple on a black Yamaha 135LC motorcycle placing the bag by the side of the road and leaving the scene.
The witness was unable to identify their faces.
The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth of a child and disposing of the body of a child, which carries a fine, jail term of up to two years or both.
Police are appealing for those with information to assist. They can contact investigating officer Stephen Ganeson at 016-376 7390, of the Kuala Lumpur police control centre at 03-21460522 connection 584/585 or any nearest police station. - Mkini
