ALOR SETAR: A Malaysian who works as a postman for Singapore Post Ltd pleaded guilty to concealing his travel history during a Covid-19 health screening.
According to the charge sheet, Omar Mat Khatib, 31, from Kg Bukit Man Inson, Pendang, had on March 26, failed to provide information on his travel history to health officer Mohamad Syazwan Mohd Elsa.
Police contacts say that Omar had been working in Singapore and had left the island republic on March 18, ahead of the movement control order (MCO) taking effect in Malaysia.
Several days later, Omar had suffered a fever and flu-like symptoms, prompting him to visit the Pendang District Health Clinic.
He pleaded guilty to the charge in front of Magistrate Siti Nor Hidayah Mohd Noor.
The Magistrate offered Omar the choice of three months' imprisonment or community service, and he opted for the latter.
He will be required to report to the Pendang district parole office from the date of sentencing and will be required to carry out at least three hours of community service daily.
It is believed he is the first in Malaysia to face charges of concealing travel information during the MCO.
State Deputy Public Prosecutor Fatin Dalilah Khalid prosecuted while Omar was represented by Zuriyah Mhd Nording from the National Legal Aid Foundation. - Star
