Deputy speaker latest to face scrutiny for social distancing gaffes

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Deputy speaker Rashid Hasnon is the latest political leader to face scrutiny for his failure to observe social distancing as stipulated under the movement control order to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.
On his Facebook, Rashid, who is Batu Pahat MP, can be seen in a number of photographs carrying out relief work and distributing much-needed aid.
However, a failure to observe social distancing is also clear from the photographs.
Commendably Rashid said that his team reached out to the "bumiputera community that has been disconnected from food."
"Hopefully this little contribution can ease their daily struggles," he added.
However, in the group photographs, Rashid and his team members are pictured standing very close to the villagers.
On April 15, Rashid distributed contributions and grants to NGOs and political parties at his Batu Pahat service centre.
Again, the photographs clearly indicate a lack of distance among the participants who even posed in close proximity with one another.
Rashid's post also stated that among those who received the stock of donations are Bersatu, PAS, Umno, Amanah, MIC and MCA plus many other non-political organisations.
When contacted, Rashid referred to another photograph which supposedly showed him sitting at a table together with Batu Pahat district officer Zulkiflee Abbas, who is also the local national security council head.

"We observed a social distance. That was during a distribution organised by the local national security council," he explained.

Rashid also stressed that he has taken steps to observe the social distancing guidelines while distributing donations.
Scrutiny into Rashid comes after Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali posted a series of photographs on his Facebook of him and his entourage visiting a tahfiz school in Lenggong, Perak.
In the pictures, he is depicted handing out goods to several people. About 20 people were also shown eating a meal together while sitting next to each other, including the deputy minister.
The post was subsequently deleted, although Perak state executive councillor Razman Zakaria has apologised to the people for the gathering, and Perak police chief Perak police chief Razarudin Husain said all who attended would be investigated.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar also came in for a bashing when he shared a photo of him having lunch with former Terengganu MB Ahmad Said on Friday.
