PETALING JAYA: The Indian High Commission is in discussions with Putrajaya on how it can jointly attend to its nationals holed up in two buildings in Kuala Lumpur which were placed under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) earlier this week.
An officer who asked to remain anonymous said the commission is in the dark over the number of Indian citizens at the Selangor Mansion and Malayan Mansion buildings on Jalan Masjid India.
He told FMT they were awaiting official figures from the health ministry.
“But our first priority is providing food and medical supplies during this lockdown period,” he added.
He also said any assistance for the Indian citizens there would be given together with the federal territories ministry, health ministry and other stakeholders.
Earlier today, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the majority of residents at the two buildings were foreigners.
Because of this, he said, the relevant foreign embassies would be responsible for their daily needs. However, he added that foreigners could ask the operations centre for assistance in purchasing food.
A spokesman from the Indonesian embassy also said it was awaiting details from Putrajaya on any citizens it has at the two buildings.
He added that the embassy’s priorities for its citizens depend on their needs.
“But we have a budget for them,” he added.
Residents of Selangor Mansion and Malayan Mansion are prohibited from leaving their homes until all of them have been screened for Covid-19.
The buildings were placed under EMCO after 15 cases of the virus were recorded there. - FMT
