CORONAVIRUS | It's been raining accolades for Health Ministry director-general, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, for his dedication battling the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Perhaps the youngest of his fans could be nine-year-old Lara Khadijah Cornelius McAfee, an aspiring gymnast from Terengganu.
She penned an appreciation letter and gifted a loom band to Noor Hisham.
Lara received a delightful surprise after Noor Hisham replied to her.
Lara's handwritten letter, dated March 19, reads:
"I have made this blue loom band for you to thank you for all the work you are doing to help the people of Malaysia.
"Stay safe and healthy during this virus outbreak. Your friend, Lara."
The letter has gone viral on social media.
Her "new friend" Noor Hisham replied to her letter on April 16.
The letter sighted by Malaysiakini reads that he thanked Lara for the letter and the bracelet.
"My granddaughter is wearing it and she likes it," he said.
Noor Hisham also told Lara that he's lucky to have a great team with him to help the country.
"Your words are too kind but I am not doing it alone.
"I am lucky to have a great team with me to help our country.
"Fellow Malaysians like yourself, have been a wonderful help by playing your part by staying at home," he said.
Noor Hisham ended the letter by advising Lara to study hard.
"One day, it will be your turn to help Malaysia. Follow your dreams and work hard for it.
"From your new friend, Dr Hisham."
China Global TV Network (CGTN) has listed Noor Hisham as one of the world’s top three doctors "born" from public health officials in handling the Covid-19 outbreak.
In responding to the recognition, Noor Hisham had said: "It is not a recognition of my (work) but the nation collectively."
Overwhelmed
When contacted, Lara's mother Mutiara Jusuf Mcafee said her family, especially Lara, are overwhelmed and excited that the letter reached Noor Hisham.
"We couriered the letter to the director-general on March 19.
"Only yesterday his office called me to inform that they have received Lara's letter.
"They asked for my home address to reply to the letter," she said.
Mutiara said she had encouraged Lara to write a letter to Noor Hisham and suggested to Lara to make a loom band since the latter likes to make loom bands.
"We searched for a colour related to healthcare, so we came out with a white and blue loom band," she said.
Last year, Channel News Asia featured Lara in its story on Terengganu barring aspiring female gymnasts over revealing attire concerns.
