BATU GAJAH: Three men who were caught playing golf during the movement control order (MCO) period were sentenced to three days’ jail and fined RM1,000 each after pleading guilty to breaching the partial lockdown.
In imposing the sentence, magistrate Nazratul Natrah Mohd Yusof said the trio, as educated persons, should have been an example to others in obeying the law and remaining indoors.
However, she ordered for their golf bags to be returned.
Golf club manager Low Teck San, 68, transport company manager Tan Chee Kean, 59, and tuition teacher Eugene Wong Yat Hoe, 37, were charged for gathering at Clearwater Sanctuary Resort Golf Club here yesterday for the purpose of playing a round of golf.
They were charged under Regulation 6(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 which carries a fine of up to RM1,000, a maximum jail term of six months or both upon conviction.
Lawyer K Parveen Sharma, who appeared for the accused, asked for a minimal fine, saying they regretted their action.
However, deputy public prosecutor Nor Fairoz Abd Mutalib pressed for a deterrent sentence that would include a jail term, saying the MCO had entered its third phase.
“A fine is inadequate for such an offence at this point of time,” he added.
Parveen said all three paid their fines and are expected to be freed from prison later today. - FMT
