Gov't going after those who spread 'CIQ rush' video

Malaysiakini

The authorities have identified those who spread a video clip ostensibly depicting people storming Immigration facilities in Johor yesterday.
Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the authorities viewed the matter very seriously because it had caused public fear, especially among those residing in Johor Bahru.
"No one will be spared. No one is higher than the law.
"Anyone who is involved in spreading fake news (will face the law), regardless of their status," he said.
Earlier today, the Immigration Department had explained that the video depicted a fire drill on Dec 18, 2019 at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Johor Bahru.
Late last night, the video clip was shared on Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh's Facebook page and was removed a short while after.
According to the caption which accompanied the video, a large crowd of Malaysians were trying to enter Malaysia and the situation was out of control.
Fuziah's Facebook page has since carried a note whereby the "administrator" of the page apologised for posting an old video clip.
According to Ismail, the police and Communications and Multimedia Commission has opened 207 investigation papers of fake news regarding the Covid-19 outbreak.
Of this figure, 23 individuals have been charged for spreading fake news.
In a related development, Ismail said there are currently 10,328 undergoing mandatory quarantine after returning from abroad.
He added that the number of quarantine centres has been increased to 146, up three from yesterday.
A total of 666 individuals were arrested for MCO-related offences yesterday, of which 392 have been issued a RM1,000 fine.
As of yesterday, the total number of people arrested for MCO-related offences was 7,479. - Mkini
