Govt to announce on Friday if MCO extended or not

Normally busy streets in Kuala Lumpur now empty and silent under the movement control order which has been in place since March 18.

KUALA LUMPUR: In about 72 hours, the public will be able to know whether the movement control order (MCO), enforced on March 18, will be further extended to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The government is expected to announce on Friday whether the order, already extended once to April 14, will be prolonged again.

Whether the MCO, which enters its 22nd day today, will be extended depends on the situation.

Malaysia has so far recorded 69 sporadic cases where the source of infection cannot be traced.

Yesterday, 170 new cases and one death were reported, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 3,963 with 63 deaths.

While the crime index has dropped by 70%, the number of people arrested for violating the MCO also increased to 6,451.

A total of 666 public sanitation operations have been held in 79 zones including all 18 red zones in the country.

The disinfected premises comprise government buildings and 24,077 units of People’s Housing Projects.

Five areas have been placed under an enhanced movement control order: Simpang Renggam in Kluang, Johor; Sungai Lui in Hulu Langat, Selangor; and Menara City One, Malayan Mansion and Selangor Mansion in Kuala Lumpur. - FMT
