Health DG: Easing border control for social travels must wait

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says the country must maintain tight control over its borders.
This, he said, means that travel for social or educational reasons must wait.
"For easing restrictions, we are looking at whether some of the economic sectors can take off first.
"Meaning the social and education sectors will have to wait a bit longer," he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He said easing border restrictions must be done slowly. This is especially as more cases are being identified in other countries.
He added that tight border control is part of the reason that the movement control order (MCO) has been successful.
New infections have been in double digits for a week now, indicating the curve of the pandemic is flattening.
On whether the movement control order will be extended, Noor Hisham said the ministry aims to provide Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin the necessary data to evaluate this within a few days.
The MCO is slated to end on April 28.
Noor Hisham said one factor that needs to be looked at was local transmissions, of which there were 52 cases today, including 22 migrants.
Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said the government is also exploring collaborations with other countries in regards to working on a vaccine.
He also confirmed that two companies from China are interested in running clinical trials here but that it was too early to say anything yet. - Mkini
