CORONAVIRUS | Heineken Malaysia Bhd will continue to engage the government after the revocation of its initial approval granted to operate throughout the movement control order (MCO) period.
In a statement last night, Heineken said it will continue to suspend operations of its brewery in Sungei Way, in line with the MCO.
"The board of directors wishes to inform that the government’s approval received by the company in early April for the company to resume limited operations with a minimal number of essential staff during the MCO period has been cancelled with immediate effect.
"Given the above circumstances, the company will continue to suspend operations at the Sungei Way Brewery," it added.
At the same time, Heineken said the company would continue engagement with the government over the matter, whilst ensuring it mitigates the impact of suspension to its operations.
"The company will make the necessary announcement on any other material developments relating to the above matter, as and when appropriate," it added.
On Monday, Putrajaya revoked the approvals granted for Heineken and Carlsberg to resume limited operations with a minimal number of workers during the MCO period.
At a daily Covid-19 update press conference, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob confirmed that the decision was made at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
This came after Umno, PAS and Bersatu leaders criticised the government for making such a decision when alcohol was not an essential product.
Heineken was previously not allowed to operate during the first phase of the MCO from March 18 to 31. - Mkini
