A police inspector charged with trafficking and power abuse to exploit two Mongolian women for sex has claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Klang today.
Hazrul Hizham Ghazali (above) pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out to him before judge Tasnim Abu Bakar.
On the first charge, the 30-year-old was said to have trafficked a Mongolian woman and abused his power to exploit the woman for sex at a hotel in Petaling Jaya between 10.30pm on April 10 and 8.30pm on April 11.
On the second charge, he allegedly trafficked another Mongolian woman and abused his power for the same intention and at the same hotel, between 10.30pm on April 10 and 8.30pm on April 11.
Both women are aged between 20 and 40.
The inspector who is attached to the Petaling Jaya police station was charged under Section 13 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007.
If found guilty, he could be sentenced to jail between three and 20 years, and a fine.
Judge Tasnim allowed the accused to be released on an RM20,000 bail, with one surety.
He was ordered to surrender his international passport and report to the nearest police station once a month.
Earlier, DPP Mohammad Al Saifi Hashim had suggested bail of RM15,000 for each charge but defence lawyer Shah Rizal Abdul Manan requested for a lower amount as the accused had cooperated fully during the investigation and was suspended from work.
Judge Tasnim fixed June 17, 2020, for mention of the case.
Media had previously reported that the accused was on duty at a movement control order (MCO) roadblock in Petaling Jaya when the police stopped a vehicle that was transporting the victims.
After failing to provide an explanation for their movements, the women were arrested but instead of being taken to the police station, the accused had brought them to a hotel. - Mkini
