CORONAVIRUS | The government has distributed 24.8 million pieces of free face masks as of yesterday, according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said the amount was part of 30.7 million free face masks allocated for distribution by the government as previously announced.
"As of yesterday (April 25), a total of 24.8 million masks have been distributed where each household are given four pieces of masks.
"Supplies of face masks have also been sent to Sabah and Sarawak and is now in the process of being distributed," the senior minister in charge of the security cluster said during the daily National Security Council Covid-19 update press conference in Putrajaya.
Ismail reiterated that the distribution process will be coordinated by the state National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) through 162 district offices nationwide.
In a statement last week, Nadma said more than 44 million face masks have been distributed to frontliners and households nationwide as of April 18.
From the figure, Nadma said 11.9 million pieces were reserved for frontliners while the remaining have been distributed in stages so far to 8.16 million households beginning April 2.
The face masks were distributed by State Disaster Management Committees and the Civil Defence Force, with each packet containing four pieces that carried a label stating it was a contribution from the Malaysian government. - Mkini
