'Longer sacrifice may be needed' - Minister hints at MCO extension

Malaysiakini

Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa hinted that the movement control order (MCO) could be extended beyond April 14.
In a Twitter posting this afternoon, he said the Health Ministry has given the impression that “we must be prepared for a longer sacrifice” to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“We believe that a detailed guideline and standard operating procedure (SOP) would be issued immediately,” he added.
On the same note, Annuar said there would be a stricter implementation of the MCO in the Federal Territories.
The government had implemented the MCO on March 18. The order was scheduled to expire on March 31 but was extended to April 14.
Several areas, including seven villages in Selangor, two villages in Johor and a condominium in Kuala Lumpur have been placed under total lockdown due to the high infection rate.
Previously, it was reported that the Health Ministry would furnish the relevant data on April 10 to help the government decide if there is a need to extend the MCO.
Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the decision would be made based on the number of new Covid-19 cases registered on a daily basis.
“The data will need to tell us whether we need to extend or not […] The reality is that we have to base it on science and facts.
“We hope that by April 10, the data will be available for us to make a decision on whether we need to extend it or not,” he added.
As of yesterday, Malaysia recorded 3,662 Covid-19 cases and 61 deaths. - Mkini
