MCO: Chief Justice orders remand proceedings conducted at police stations

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat has ordered all remand proceedings to be conducted at police stations nationwide rather than at courts during the movement control order (MCO) period.
According to a copy of a letter by Federal Court chief registrar Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh dated April 1, Tengku Maimun agreed to the request by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Mansor.
The Federal Court registrar's letter is in response to an earlier letter from Mazlan applying for magistrates and court registrars to conduct remand proceedings at police stations during the MCO period.
Mazlan's letter, dated April 1 and signed by him, made the request on grounds to minimise risk of contracting Covid-19 by minimising movement, practising social distancing, as well as overcoming logistic issues faced by the police who are now actively involved in roadblocks and patrols to enforce the MCO nationwide.
According to Ahmad Terrirudin's letter, the chief justice however sought the police to fulfill a few conditions in return.
The conditions are that the police would: inform the courts early when there is a remand application; ensure the safety of court officers and staff as well as lawyers (if any); safeguard the right of suspects to be represented by lawyers; and abide by the Covid-19 management guidelines issued by the Health Ministry from time to time.
It was reported that all court hearings are to be postponed until the end of the MCO period, which was implemented on March 18 to curb the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia. - Mkini
