MCO extension? Health Ministry to advise PM soon

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry will recommend to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin over the next few days whether there is a need to extend the movement control order (MCO) beyond April 28.
"Whether the MCO will be lifted or continued, we will give our advice but the prime minister will decide," Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at the ministry's daily Covid-19 update in Putrajaya.
Noor Hisham reiterated there are criteria which must be fulfilled for the MCO to end, including border control, movement control and adapting to the new normal standards.
"These standards will be there and it will transcend across all ministries.
"These criteria we need to fulfil before we can even consider ending the MCO," he said.
Noor Hisham said the ministry's latest advice to the government will be made based on its latest modelling, facts and figures, as well as the World Health Organisation's advise which is customised to Malaysia's situation.
"That's how we will put up the framework.
"The framework comes from the ministry but we still need to empower the employers, for example, to follow it," he explained.
At present, Noor Hisham noted the downward trajectory of active cases and the double-digit trend in new infections could further improve within one or two weeks.
The MCO was first enforced on March 18 and Muhyiddin had announced extensions into the second and third phase several days before the end of the phase.  - Mkini
