MCO temporary prisons to begin operation on April 23

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Home Ministry has gazetted 11 temporary prisons to hold movement control order (MCO) offenders and they will start operation on April 23, said Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The defence minister confirmed this during a press conference from Putrajaya that was broadcast live on Facebook this afternoon.
“As I have announced recently, the government will set up special prisons for those who violate MCO.
“Today, the government through the Home Ministry has gazetted 11 temporary prisons for detainees who violated MCO.
“The temporary prisons will begin operating on April 23, 2020, and the Health Ministry will be ready to assist by providing health personnel (there),” Ismail said.
Meanwhile, in reading out MCO-related statistics as of yesterday, he said the police have detained 1,111 people nationwide for violating MCO.
He said out of this number, 997 individuals were remanded while 114 individuals were released on police bail, with the cumulative arrests for MCO violation as of yesterday being 14,750 individuals.
Ismail also said that as of yesterday, the police and the armed forces have checked 451,487 vehicles through 820 roadblocks nationwide, and that 51,706 spot checks were conducted with 5,861 premises checked by the authorities.
On April 15, Ismail said Putrajaya would convert 13 academies under the Prions Department to incarcerate those who violate MCO.
Previously, the courts had jailed MCO violators but the Prisons Department complained this led to overcrowding and could create new Covid-19 outbreaks as social distancing was difficult in these facilities. - Mkini
