MINIMIZE INFECTION - COVID-19

The virus that causes Covid-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. These droplets are too heavy to hang around in the air. They quickly fall on the floor or on to other surfaces.

You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are 1 meter away from a person who has Covid-19 or by touching a contaminated surface or object and then rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.

As mentioned above, you could acquire the virus after touching any contaminated surface or object. It is not known how long the virus can survive on clothing and other surfaces harder to disinfect. The absorbent natural fibers in in cupboard, however, may cause the virus to dry up more quickly than on plastics and metal. Researchers have found that the virus is detectable on copper for up to 4 hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours and on plastic and metals for up to 72 hours. Changes in temperature and humidity may also affect how long the virus can survive. Suspended droplets in the air, as they are more exposed, are likely to be more unstable. The ability of the virus to linger on for so long underlines the importance of personal hygiene and for cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and objects.

Researchers have found that pathogens can travel up to 4 meters after being coughed into the air. Therefore, it is PARAMOUNT to strictly stay indoors if you have a cough. Treat your cough first before you ever think of venturing outdoors. If you are single and have a cough, please ask your neighbor or a close friend living close-by to buy groceries and necessities for you. DON'T LEAVE HOME IF YOU HAVE A COUGH AND COLD!!!

Even if you have an unexpected cough, please cough into a tissue or a handkerchief. If you do not have a tissue or a handkerchief, then please cough or sneeze into your upper sleeves. Please do NOT cough into the air. People around you are more likely to be paranoid when someone coughs or sneezes. Please dispose off the tissue appropriately. Never throw it away indiscriminately. Be considerate! Dispose the tissue in a plastic bag and immediately tie the top of the bag. Then wash your hands well with soap and water. In the case of the soiled handkerchief and the shirt or top, please soak in hot water and detergent when you get home from the outdoors or soon after if you had coughed or sneezed at home. Then, wash your hands well with soap and water.

When you return home after going outdoors, you must immediately take a bath and change your clothes. The used clothes must be soaked in hot water and detergent immediately after you have taken a bath. And finally wash your hands well with soap and water.

You may wear a surgical face mask, if you can afford it. Or you could sew yourself a face mask. Choose a piece of cotton fabric, pre-wash it, and dry it well in the sun. Then go online and they will teach you step by step on how to sew your own face mask. According to the World Health Organization, wearing a face mask may create a false sense of security because it may lead to neglecting fundamental hygiene measures.

To protect yourself, keep at least 1 meter distance away from others and disinfect surfaces and objects that are touched frequently. Regularly wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, nose and face.
