CORONAVIRUS | The Home Ministry has granted a 90-day grace period for the people to register births and deaths after the movement control order (MCO) is lifted, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ismail said the Home Ministry made this decision due to people being unable to register births of newborn babies or deaths due to restrictions on movement during the MCO.
“Registration of births and deaths could not be done due to the MCO. So KDN (Home Ministry) made the decision to extend the period (to register the births and deaths) to 90 days after the MCO is lifted.
“So one can register births of babies as well as deaths after we announce the (lifting of the) MCO. The penalty (for non-registration of births and deaths during the MCO) is abolished so there would be no penalty,” he said.
He was speaking during a press conference in Putrajaya that was streamed live on Facebook this afternoon.
Ismail explained that this 90-day grace period after the MCO is lifted also applies to Malaysians overseas who need to register births and deaths but unable to return home due to the countries they are in having imposed similar movement control order to combat Covid-19.
“For people (Malaysians) outside the country, we give the same 90-day grace period after the movement control order in those foreign countries (where Malaysians were unable to leave to return to Malaysia).
“After the movement control order in those countries is lifted, we (government) give 90-days from the end of those countries’ (Covid-19 related) emergency period (for Malaysians there to get in touch with) our embassies there,” he said.
Ismail added that for those who lost their identification cards (ICs) or need to replace their ICs so that they could claim the Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN), they can try to contact the nearest National Registration Department in their districts.
The minister said the applicants can then set appointments with the NRD officers to replace their ICs.
Ismail said for those who have a non-urgent need to amend their ICs, they can do so during the 90-day grace period after the MCO is lifted nationwide. - Mkini
