Civil servants are still getting paid during the movement control order (MCO) and therefore need to pay their housing loans with the Public Sector Home Financing Board (LPPSA), said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He pointed out that civil servants also receive the RM500 incentive for civil servants Grade 56 and below.
"With regard to the government housing loan, as it was previously announced and answered by the government, government staff still receive their salaries as normal.
"The only ones not receiving salaries are petty traders like those selling pisang goreng (banana fritters) and so on, as they could not operate their business (during the MCO) and hence they received grants," he added.
He was speaking during a press conference in Putrajaya that was live-streamed online this afternoon.
On April 9, it was reported that the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) wanted the government to offer a three-month deferment on housing loans taken by civil servants via LPPSA.
Earlier on April 8, LPPSA said that it would not impose any moratorium on monthly loan repayments for civil servants as their welfare is taken care of.
Meanwhile during the same press conference, Ismail Sabri said that the Housing and Local Government Ministry received many applications from companies wishing to conduct public sanitation of areas as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
He said that the government welcomes these companies' involvement in public sanitation as part of anti-Covid-19 measures.
He said that the companies would need to abide by regulation and the advice of the Health Ministry, and their sanitisation activities would be monitored by the Fire and Rescue Department.
Ismail Sabri also gave an update on the statistics of MCO enforcement as of yesterday, with the police and armed forces having checked 369,106 vehicles through 820 roadblocks nationwide.
The authorities have conducted 42,482 spot checks nationwide, with 6,856 premises checked, he added.
Ismail Sabri noted that the police had arrested 1,174 individuals for violating MCO as of yesterday compared to 1,111 detained two days ago.
Of the 1,174 detained, 1,012 have been remanded and 162 released on police bail, with the cumulative arrests for MCO violation as of yesterday being 15,924, he said.
In relation to Covid-19 related fake news as of yesterday, he said the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have opened 229 Investigation Papers (IPs) compared to the previous figure of 220.
From the 229 IPs, 161 are still under investigation and 24 cases have been charged in court, with 13 pleading guilty, he said, adding that 11 related warning notices have been issued and 33 cases were labelled as No Further Action. - Mkini
