CORONAVIRUS | The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has teamed up with e-retailer Shopee to form a fund that would go towards the welfare of healthcare workers affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
In a statement today, MMA said the funds will be handled by its charity arm the Malaysian Medical Association Foundation and Shopee will match donations received from the public.
Donations can be channelled through Shopee's app or website. Donations of RM100 and above will come with a receipt for tax exemption purposes.
MMA and MMA Foundation has contributed RM50,000 to kick off the fund.
MMA Foundation president Dr A Krishnamoorty said public healthcare workers were "true heroes" and urged Malaysians to remember their sacrifice.
"Many Malaysians during this Movement Control Order (MCO) period may prefer to shop online as they must remain at home.
"We hope that while shopping for their items, Malaysians would spare some support for our medical frontliners who are working around the clock battling the Covid-19 pandemic at our public hospitals," he added.
MMA president Dr N Ganabaskaran said public healthcare workers have to sacrifice time with loved ones in order to take part in the fight against Covid-19.
"These brave souls are facing the enemy on the frontlines of this battle. Many do not realise that they are also putting themselves at risk to save our rakyat," he said.
MMA is the main representative body for all registered medical practitioners in Malaysia. - Mkini
